Hip Pain

How to stop stubborn hip pain and restore your active life.

Hip pain can be complex, stubborn and deeply disruptive. Whether it’s a sharp pinch during certain movements, a deep ache that makes it hard to sleep or stiffness that limits your daily routine, hip pain has a way of interfering with the things that matter most: your work, your exercises, your time with family, even your confidence in your body.

Unlike more obvious injuries, hip pain can be difficult to pinpoint and often builds up slowly over time. It might stem from the joint itself, surrounding muscles and tendons, or referred from the lower back, which makes self-diagnosis and quick fixes unreliable. Conditions such as hip impingement, labral tears, gluteal tendinopathy, and bursitis are frequently overlooked, leaving many to suffer with persistent discomfort and no clear path forward.

Does This Sound Like You?

Hip pain stopping you from doing things you love?

Whether it’s walking, training at the gym, sitting for long periods, or simply sleeping on your side, hip pain can affect every part of your day. It often sneaks up gradually, until suddenly you’re avoiding stairs, skipping workouts or cutting back on the activities that make you feel like you. Resting may temporarily relieve discomfort, but without proper diagnosis and treatment, the problem is likely to persist or even worsen.

Tired of Temporary Fixes?

Most of our clients have already tried the basics eg. resting, taking anti-inflammatories, foam rolling, YouTube stretches, but still find themselves stuck in a frustrating cycle. Some may have even seen other healthcare professionals for help. The pain improves slightly, only to return when they try to get back to exercising, or even sitting, standing or walking for long periods.

Confused with Conflicting Advice?

Perhaps you've tried following advice from friends or family, or maybe you've spent hours searching for the right exercises online, only to find that nothing seems to work or even more made it worse? Knee pain is highly individual, and what works for one person usually will not work for another. Our targeted, personalised treatment plans will ensure we address your specific condition.

Hip Conditions We Treat

Gluteal Tendinopathy (or Hip Bursitis)

An overuse injury of the tendons on the outside of the hip, particularly the gluteus medius/minimus. Symptoms often present as pain when lying on your side, standing/sitting for prolonged periods and walking.

Hip Labral Tear

Damage to the cartilage ring (labrum) that lines the hip socket. Can be caused by trauma, sports, or repetitive movements, and may occur with structural issues like hip impingement. This leads to sharp groin pain and clicking sensation.

Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)

A mechanical issue where the bones of the hip joint don’t fit together perfectly, causing abnormal contact and wearing down the joint. Individuals may present with pinching pain with squatting and prolonged sitting.

Hip Osteoarthritis

A degenerative condition where the cartilage cushioning the hip joint wears down over time, leading to stiffness, inflammation and pain, especially with walking, prolonged sitting, or first thing in the morning.

Referred Pain from Low Back

Sometimes what feels like hip pain actually originates from the lower back or sacroiliac joint. Nerves from the spine can refer pain to the buttock, groin, or thigh.

How We Can Help

This session is entirely dedicated to understanding you. A whole-body approach will be used to uncover the root cause of your pain or limitations, ensuring that we’re not just chasing symptoms, but creating a long-term solution. Here's what you can expect in your first session:

1. Understanding Your Story

We start by listening to your story, your symptoms, and your concerns. We'll explore your injury history, activity levels, lifestyle habits, and what you've tried before. No detail is too small, because everything contributes to the bigger picture.

2. Assessment to Identify Diagnosis

Rather than just treating symptoms, we aim to uncover what’s truly driving your pain or dysfunction. Through a detailed physical assessment, we’ll analyse your posture, movement patterns, biomechanics, joint mobility, muscle strength, and control to identify any imbalances or compensations. This allows us to pinpoint not just where the problem is, but why it’s happening.

3. Hands-On Treatment

We’ll begin hands-on therapy during your initial consultation. This may include soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, or other manual techniques aimed at reducing pain, improving movement, and accelerating your progress from the start.

4. Bespoke Treatment Plan

Before we finish, we will discuss a clear treatment plan tailored to your goals - whether it's to getting back to doing day-to-day tasks pain-free, running a marathon or simply moving without feeling restricted. This roadmap outlines the key phases of your recovery and the outcomes we’ll be working towards together. You’ll know exactly what to expect and what kind of outcomes we can expect together.

"I started physio with James in March this year as a result of ongoing issues connected with hip arthritis and knee pain. From the start, his approach has been friendly and professional, he demonstrates exceptional knowledge and empathy, and he has really taken time to really understand the issues I was facing. This treatment has been part of my ongoing effort to improve my general fitness as I get older, and he has been very encouraging with my progress along the way. I am walking better, I feel stronger and I have much less pain and discomfort from the hips and knees. James’ approach is very very reassuring as he is able to see and understand the bigger picture of what I am trying to achieve. Thank you James!"
